Last 16th October, the BETTED project celebrated a workshop on Decarbonising the Dairy sector: Energy Efficiency, Heat Pumps & Biogas Across the Value Chain, organised in collaboration by International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR), European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) and Institute for European Energy and Climate Policy Foundation (IEECP). The event successfully brought together experts and professionals from Europe to discuss practical pathways for reducing emissions and improving efficiency across Europe’s dairy value chain.

During the session, our colleague from EHPA introduced theBETTED project, its objectives and expected results, and our colleague from the University of Brescia, in Italy, presented the BETTED Toolbox, a suite of seven practical, user-friendly spreadsheet documents designed to help dairy companies assess energy use, emissions, and costs, and evaluate technologies such as heat pumps and biogas available for free on the BETTED website. Experts from the IIR also highlighted opportunities to improveenergy efficiency in the cold chain, including recovering heat from refrigeration systems to reduce energy waste.

Other speakers from a leading industrial equipment manufacturer called Armstrong International, and a sustainability consultancy named Q-Plan International, shared complementary perspectives. They discussed how industrial heat pumps can recover low-grade waste heat for reuse in production and how biogas and biomethane projects can transform livestock waste into renewable energy.

With the right technologies, knowledge, and collaboration across the value chain, dairies can turn energy challenges into opportunities for growth and sustainability.
